Jam Rock: Shukor
Shukor 2008, the extravaganza returns

I

n life, there should be after-parties for everything, even the club. Imagine yourself outside in the open air, feet on soft grass or sitting poolside still partying it up after you have left the sometimes hot, enclosed club. Imagine no more. This year is the 4th Annual Shukor Mansion Party and its hosts, East Coast Sound Patrol and Madd Drama Records, are bringing much more talent and many more people into the mix than before.

In essence, the once-a-year party will be more like a festival. “When you come, you’ve got fresh air, you’ve got the moon, you’ve got the stars,” said DJ Armageddon, Shukor founder and organizer. At the 88-acre Broadwater Estates in Upper Marlboro, party hosts plan to have 5,000 people dancing, eating and partying the night away. And we’re being literal. The party starts at 11:00pm and goes until 6:00 in the morning.

MCs of the night are Angie Ange from 93.9 WKYS and Ra-Ra “The Party Starter.” On the stage, DJs from across the board, including DJ Armageddon, DJ Trini of 93.9, DJ Quick Silva of 93.9, DJ Spyda, Harry Hotter and Half Krazy, will each play 30-minute sets throughout the night. There are various dance areas, including right in front of the stage for people to “move it a little closer.” Lounge by the swimming pool or take a dip. Puff a little in the hookah lounge. “We just want people to have a good time and enjoy themselves,” said Armageddon.

Twenty-five tables are available for “first come, first serve” reservations. Bottles, like Henny or Grey Goose, run about $110, but if you’re a Cristal or Ace of Spades drinker, of course, its going to run you a bit more. The drinks are overall moderately priced (they truly understand the gas situation). Chef Chester Shaw of Felix Restaurant and his team will prepare his new American/ Caribbean/ Soul menu of Jerk Chicken, Jerk Shrimp, Mini Burgers and Crab Cakes.

Search “Shukor 2007” on Youtube.com or check out the Facebook event page http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=18530070838&ref=share to see a little of what lies in store. To quote one of the wall posts, “that $h*t was poppin’ last year,” so go ahead and buy your ticket now.
