The event was in celebration of Nuit Blance, DC’s first overnight contemporary arts festival. The energy all over the city on Saturday was none other than electric!

The night at SUBMERGE began with a performance from a local dance crew, then transitioned into a fashion presentation featuring clothing from area boutiques like Tari, Redeem, It’s Vintage Darling, Treasury, Current Boutique, and Dr. K’s. Local make-up guru Yaneek Proctor shared her talents, while the crew at Salon Cielo styled hair to perfection. Recording artist Alison Carney put the icing on the cake with an exhilarating performance that ended with her hit single ‘Japanese Candy’. Congratulations to Peter Chang, Brandon Hill, and DYDC for executing a seamless event. If you missed it, check out some amazing shots here…

The show entitled ‘Mighty Aphrodite’ was held at Wonderbox, a back alley photography studio. The show’s concept was to bring the backstage to the forefront. Models had their hair and make up done, were dressed, and styled, all while attendees watched. Jones used area boutiques like Redeem, Tari, It’s Vintage Darling, and Palace 5ive to bring his vision to light. Local jewelry designer Regina Ray was also on hand to showcase her fall collection.

There was also no runway at this fashion show, Jones instructed models to climb steep scaffolding and ladders to show off looks. DJ Spinser Tracy provided the beats for the night, while local fire eater Leah Golden kept the crowd engaged throughout the event. Attendees also saw food demonstrations from an area chef, sipped on cocktails provided by Belvedere Intense, and witnessed live mural painting. It was truly a multi-sensory event like nothing I’ve witnessed before. Amazing.

For the Club Coke 2011 campaign, this edition will be introduced in late March. Produced in two colors, gold and silver, imitating the helmets worn by Daft Punk — an electronic music duo consisting of French musicians Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo. Both of these exclusive bottles will be available on March 21st at Colette – and available in nightclubs in late March.

Mandarin Oriental //

The Mandarin Oriental Tokyo hotel may have the answer: use of the entire hotel, including nine restaurants and all spas and rooms — for a cool $671,000 a night. The luxury hotel in central Tokyo began selling the plan a week ago as “something splashy” to commemorate its opening five years ago, said hotel spokeswoman Chie Hayakawa. It intends to apply for recognition from Guinness World Records once a reservation is finalized.

“When the hotel opened we had an exclusive party like this — black tie, cocktail dresses. There was music and drinks and food from the restaurants, and it was all quite grand,” said Hayakawa, who took part.

“We thought it would be fun to offer the same experience to an exclusive group of guests.”
Under the plan, the entire hotel — 178 guest rooms, all nine restaurants and all spas — would be reserved from 3:00 in the afternoon to noon the next day. It would include a cocktail reception for 500 people.

The price tag is 55 million yen ($671,800).

Hayakawa said the hotel has already received a number of inquiries, mainly from companies, though individuals would be welcome as well.

“The only thing is, you have to pick a date where there are no reservations already,” she added. “It’s not as if you could just request it for later this week.”

The pieces ranged from bright colored abstracts to interesting interpretations of popular icons. The night also included a fashion element where International fashion blogger Aureta Thomollari showed pieces from her own closet to compliment Nussbaum’s work.

Nussbaum dedicated the night to his deceased mother, and goes on to say, “After my mother’s death last year, I really began to use my art as a catharsis. This showing is definitely a celebration of her life, as well as a jumpstart to my new beginning.” Proceeds from sales of the night also went to Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind, which was an organization dear to his mother’s heart.

Nussbaum teamed up with Event Planners Quincy Jones and Horace Bradshaw, as well as DNA Luxury Consulting to ensure a memorable night. The event included an opera singer, deejay Adrian Loving, and afro beat drummers, and a reception fit enough for a king. Invitees included prominent members of the Washington political, philanthropic, fashion, art and social scenes.

Local youths along with youths from Canada, Tokyo, Korea, Brazil, and Netherlands gathered for the master classes and Jam Session at the DC Dance Collective. All leading up to the main event at the Duke Ellington Theatre in Georgetown DC.

This year’s event sponsors were Dave and Ray Entertainment, Mitch Mathis, DT Nation, and Omari Ware of Standard Events. Friends and family of Chloe & Mode Productions were also proud supporters of DC Tap Festival.
