In the art and fashion worlds, many a project begins with a fabulous party.

In the case of “Supermodels of the ’70s and ’80s,” the photographer Timothy Greenfield-Sanders’s new exhibition at Steven Kasher Gallery in Chelsea, it was a party thrown by the hairstylist Harry King. “The room was full of all these fabulous women,” the photographer says, “and it seemed an obvious opportunity.”

The resulting Ilfochromes of famous faces like Cheryl Tiegs, Dayle Haddon and Beverly Johnson are largely unretouched. “I don’t really like to retouch,” Greenfield-Sanders says. “To paraphrase something the poet Mark Strand once said about my work, the way I light things is somewhere between glamour and realism.” The limited-edition prints are sold as a portfolio of 10 and come in a handsome, handmade Tramontano leather envelope.

“Supermodels” runs through Feb. 27 at Steven Kasher Gallery, 521 West 23rd Streetn NYC; (212) 966-3978.
