That’s checkmate in the über-corporate chess game of international memorability. As the models progressed, two by two, down a bank of four escalators onto a runway tessellated in giant squares of white and acid yellow, the sixties theme was instantly apparent. Every girl had been uniformly beehived, her ’do finished with an Alice band with a satin bow on the side. Each one wore highly desirable low, pointed-to-square–toe satin pumps with slim metallic heels. There’s nothing simpler, more reductive, and essentially cheerful than that narrow phase of the sixties.
